Surgical Education and Self-Assessment Program (SESAP) 16

For more than 45 years, SESAP®(Surgical Education and Self-Assessment Program) has been a premier educational resource for practicing surgeons who want to assess and maintain their clinical knowledge. Developed by American College of Surgeons (ACS) Division of Education, the 16th edition of SESAP is designed to help surgeons acquire and apply new knowledge as well as reaffirm existing knowledge in a commitment to lifelong learning. SESAP 16 uses a robust process of self-assessment in a supportive environment to help surgeons evaluate and maintain their clinical competence and expand their knowledge.

The new edition consists of 850 newly constructed, problem-based, multiple-choice questions. Concise critiques provide evidence-based explanations regarding all the answer choices, as well as supporting references from the current literature. The questions address all 14 major content areas of general surgery, including head and neck, breast, alimentary tract, abdomen, vascular, endocrine, trauma, perioperative care, surgical critical care, problems in related specialties, oncology, skin/soft tissue, legal/ethics, and patient safety/systems of care. These categories are consistent with the American Board of Surgery (ABS) outline for topics addressed in ABS examinations. Many surgeons use SESAP to prepare for high-stakes examinations.

SESAP is a valuable self-assessment tool and is recognized by the ABS as a resource that can be used to help fulfill Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Part 2 requirements for continuing medical education (CME) credit and self assessment. A total of 90 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ can be earned. All 90 credits can be used for self-assessment, and the credits can be claimed by individual categories or all at once at the end of the program. Participants enrolled for CME credit complete a self-assessment and review process, followed by a CME test to show mastery of the content and to reinforce learning. SESAP 16 is certified for credit through October 31, 2019, and all credit must be claimed by this date.

CME credit can be earned only by using the CME Web version. Web access to SESAP 16 will be discontinued on December 31, 2019, when the program retires. This format can be combined with a supplemental print copy of the two-volume syllabus. Web access to SESAP 16 will be discontinued on December 31, 2019, when the program retires. Participants who do not want CME credit have NonCME Web and print options. The print version cannot be used for CME; it includes the two-volume syllabus, self-assessment book, and the self-scoring booklet.

Before ordering, please read about what to consider when selecting a SESAP 16 package.

SESAP Sampler

SESAP Sampler®

SESAP® Sampler is designed to enhance surgical decision-making skills and patient care through continuous, periodic self-assessment. Developed by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Division of Education, SESAP® Sampler allows users to conveniently assess their surgical knowledge from anywhere at any time.

Each month, subscribers receive five case-based, multiple-choice questions, along with discussions regarding each possible answer and citations for supporting references. The questions are previously unpublished questions developed through the same rigorous, multi-step, peer-review process used for SESAP 16. The topics parallel the content outline for the general surgery recertification examination. Upcoming topics include breast, trauma, abdomen, vascular, endocrine, thoracic, and alimentary tract.

The Web-based self-assessment resource is offered as an annual subscription consisting of 12 monthly online modules and provides the opportunity to earn a maximum of 6 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. These credits may be helpful in meeting of Maintenance of Certification Part 2 requirements of the American Board of Surgery for continuing medical education credit and self assessment.
