Team-based Care: Integrating Health Care Professionals into Surgical Practi

Webcast Session DC22 —Team-based Care: Integrating Health Care Professionals into Surgical Practice

Most surgeons have limited knowledge regarding employment of, or collaborative practice with, other health care professionals (scribes, medical assistants, physician assistants, advance practice nurses, nurse practitioners, clinical pharmacists, etc), yet it is clear that they are critical members of a highly functioning, team based, surgical practice that brings value through improved patient safety, satisfaction, and quality. Most surgeons want, or think they want, to partner with other health professionals in an employed or partner model. This course will educate surgeons about team based care in the context of current changes in health care and the data regarding the impact of teams on patient outcomes. This course will review the education, training, and scope of practice of these health professionals, how to choose the right members for your team, as well as the practicalities of credentialing, billing, and documenting for these team members. Finally, the role for inter-professional education in training surgeons and their team members will be discussed along with the perspective of different stakeholders. At the conclusion of this course, surgeons will be able to list the benefits of team based care, describe the roles of each team member, decide which type of professional is necessary for your team, and to hire, credential, bill, and document for a health professional team member. Success will ultimately benefit the patient, the care givers and the institution/practice.
