Surgeons, surgical residents, and nurse educators, under the leadership of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Division of Education, have developed this guide targeted specifically for patients. The Patient Education Workgroup under the ACS Committee on Resident Education sought to help patients learn more about the surgical team, the role of the surgical resident, and how a patient benefits from a surgical resident’s involvement in his or her care.

The Your Lung Operation Skills Program provides patients needing a lung resection with the knowledge and training to support full participation and optimal recovery.  The program includes a 20-page booklet and a 30-minute DVD with an overview of the lungs and procedure options, preoperative preparation, cancer staging, potential risks of procedures, discharge information and home care instructions. Separate information sheets include lung images for the surgeon to review and use for drawing, medication lists, exercise and pulmonary rehab activity guides, and quit smoking resources. All Joint Commission safety guidelines are incorporated such as site marking, ID band checks, and pneumonia and DVT prevention strategies.
