The ACS NSQIP/AGS Best Practices Guidelines are a set of strategies developed to provide health care professionals with evidence-based recommendations regarding the prevention, diagnosis, or treatment of common postsurgical complications. The guidelines have been developed as a tool to be used for quality improvement purposes and may be used in quality improvement initiatives and programs. This document is meant to aid surgeons and the responsible physician or health care provider who must make the final decisions regarding patient care and who also should take into account the patient’s individual clinical presentation. 

The documents may be downloaded or purchased for personal use by health care professionals, but may not be distributed for profit without the consent of the American College of Surgeons or the American Geriatrics Society.

The Surgical Patient Education Feeding Tube Home Skills Kit is a simulation-based, multimedia program that supports self-paced learning and safe self-management following discharge. Each skill kit contains practice equipment, a DVD with skill demonstration, an instruction booklet with images, discharge guidelines, references for additional support, and a step-by-step checklist to guide performance and evaluation of skill acquisition. The Feeding Tube Home Skills Kit was developed with multi-association consensus and is funded in part by a grant from Applied Medical Technology, Inc.

This DVD will facilitate a better understanding of the most common types of human factor errors, why they occur, and the contexts for occurence.  The program will help surgeons and other members of the surgical team to be vigilant in watching for these errors in surgical practice, and in applying strategies to help prevent them and mitigate their effects.  The DVD is designed for individual use or teaching purposes, and includes a toolbox with supplemental resources.  Participants will be able to earn 3 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits.TM
